HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University men's basketball needed 10 extra minutes to snap its two-game skid on Sunday, outlasting Winthrop 101-95 in double overtime at the HU Convocation Center.
Hampton (6-7) scored 100 points in a game for the first time since Jan. 23, 2006, when the Pirates defeated Savannah State 100-57.
Senior forward
Du'Vaughn Maxwell (Manhattan, N.Y.) led five Pirates in double figures with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore guard
Brian Darden (Hampton, Va.) added a career-high 19 points on five 3-pointers.
Sophomore guard
Dwight Meikle (Baltimore, Md.) added 16 points, while sophomore guard
Deron Powers (Willisamsburg, Va.) chipped in 13 points and redshirt-freshman guard
Lawrence Cooks (Charlotte, N.C.) had 12 points.
The two teams were tied at 91-91 with 3:48 left in the second OT, before the Pirates scored four straight points to take a 95-91 lead with 1:26 left on a layup from Cooks. Winthrop cut the deficit to two twice, trailing 97-95 with 12 seconds to go.
But Powers and senior guard
Ramon Mercado (Hollywood, Fla.) each hit a pair of free throws in the closing seconds to clinch the win for the Pirates in their second overtime game of the season.
Hampton outscored Winthrop 15-9 in the final five minutes.
The Pirates took a 37-32 lead into the half, and they took a 45-37 lead with 17:44 left in regulation after Maxwell converted a 3-point play. The Eagles responded by scoring the next six points to close the gap to 45-43 with 14:58 left.
When Larry Brown gave the Eagles a 48-47 lead with a layup with 13:15 left in the second half, it capped off a 10-3 run for Winthrop. Winthrop later led 53-49 at the 11:50 mark of the second half, before the Pirates tied it up at 53-53 on a Cooks layup with 10:16 left.
Winthrop took a 64-60 lead with 6:09 left in regulation, but Hampton fought back and took a 72-70 lead with 2:12 left after a layup from Maxwell. But Winthrop scored six of the next 10 points to take a 76-74 lead with 31 seconds left; a Powers layup with 17 ticks left forced the first overtime session.
Maxwell opened the first overtime session with a 3-point play to give the Pirates a 79-76 lead, and a pair of free throws from junior center
Emmanuel Okoroba (Garland, Texas) at the 3:45 mark put Hampton up 81-78.
Winthrop scored the next four points to go up 82-81, before Powers hit a three to put Hampton up 84-82 with 1:40 left. But the Eagles tied the game at 84-84 in the final minute, before Mercado hit two free throws with 19 seconds left to put Hampton up 86-84.
Keon Johnson forced the second overtime with a jumper with three seconds left.
The Pirates shot 46.3 percent (31-for-67) from the floor – including a 52.4 percent clip (11-for-21) in the first half and a 50.0 percent (4-for-8) clip in the second overtime. Hampton made nine of its 18 3-pointers and 30 of 41 free throws.
Hampton outscored Winthrop 36-20 in the paint.
Winthrop (6-5) shot 36.8 percent (25-for-68) from the floor and hit 11 of 29 3-pointers. The Eagles held a 44-37 edge on the glass, but committed 21 turnovers.
Five Eagles scored in double figures, led by Keon Johnson's 24 and Keon Moore's 22 points.
