HAMPTON, Va. – After a lengthy road trip and hiatus, the Hampton University men's basketball team will return to the HU Convocation Center on Saturday evening to take on MEAC foe Florida A&M at 6 p.m.
The Pirates (3-5, 0-0 MEAC) snapped a five-game losing streak on Nov. 30 with a 72-65 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the Corpus Christi Challenge. Senior forward
Du'Vaughn Maxwell (Manhattan, N.Y.) led the way with 20 points (6-for-9 shooting, 8-for-12 at the free throw line), seven rebounds, and three blocks.
Sophomore guard
Brian Darden (Hampton, Va.) added 17 points, hitting five 3-pointers. Senior guard
Ramon Mercado (Hollywood, Fla.) came off the bench to add 10 points, while sophomore guard
Dwight Meikle (Baltimore, Md.) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Florida A&M (2-6, 0-1 MEAC) has lost four of its last five games after Thursday night's 91-87 loss at Norfolk State, despite 24 points from senior guard Jamie Adams and two other Rattlers scoring in double figures. FAMU was picked to finish 10th in the MEAC this season, and Adams was named Preseason Second Team All-MEAC.
Prior to Thursday's loss at Norfolk State, Adams led the Rattlers in scoring, averaging 17.4 points per game, while senior guard Reggie Lewis was pouring in 10.6 points a night. Junior forward Bobby King was the team's top rebounder heading into Thursday night, with 8.0 boards a contest.
Hampton is 19-11 against Florida A&M since the Pirates moved up to Div. I and joined the MEAC in 1995. The Pirates have won each of the last two meetings, including a 77-68 win at the HU Convocation Center last season. Overall, Hampton has won seven of the last 11 meetings between the two teams.
The Pirates are 11-3 against Florida A&M at home.
Hampton is 210-125 all-time against schools currently in the MEAC since moving up to Div. I and joining the conference in 1995. The Pirates have won two MEAC regular-season titles (2000-01, 2001-02) and four MEAC Tournament crowns (2001, 2002, 2006, 2011).
The Pirates went 7-8 at the HU Convocation Center last season, even though they won three of their last five home contests. During Edward Joyner Jr.'s career as a head coach, Hampton is 28-23 overall in the Convocation Center, and the Pirates won their home debut on Nov. 9, defeating William & Mary 77-69, before falling 90-79 to Delaware on Nov. 17.
