LADY PIRATES FALL TO CAMPBELL IN FOUR SETS

MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Hampton University volleyball team fell in four sets to Campbell on Friday to open the Morehead State Eagle Challenge in the Wetherby Gym, as Campbell won 3-1 (25-16, 13-25, 25-23, 25-22).

The Lady Pirates are now 4-3 on the young season.

Junior outside hitter Krista Kraskura (Kuldiga, Latvia) led Hampton with 18 kills, hitting .424 for the match after committing just four errors in 33 attempts. She fell one dig shy of a double-double, and junior rightside Vendula Strakova (Brno, Czech Republic) recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 15 kills and a team-high 19 digs.

Senior setter Bibiany Fonseca (Uberlandia, Brazil) had 38 assists and nine digs, while junior middle blocker Marija Kocevska (SkopjeKarpos, Macedonia) had a team-high three service aces to tie her career high.

Campbell jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first set, but the Lady Pirates clawed their way back and cut the lead to 14-10 after a kill from Kraskura. Campbell then scored four of the next six points to go up 18-12, before Hampton cut the lead to 18-15 with three straight points.

Campbell closed the set on a 7-1 run to take the 25-16 win and go up 1-0 in the match. Campbell hit .321 (11 kills, two errors in 28 attacks) in the first set.

The Lady Pirates bounced back in the second set, recording 15 kills and just one error in 28 total attacks for a .500 hitting percentage. Campbell led 3-1 early, before the Lady Pirates went on a 13-6 stretch to take a 14-9 lead after a kill from junior outside hitter Sonja Maksimovic (Belgrade, Serbia).

Campbell scored the next point, before Hampton scored seven straight points, taking a 21-10 lead after a kill from Strakova. Campbell then scored three of the next four points, but the Lady Pirates scored the last three points to take the set and tie the match at 1-1.

Hampton took a 7-3 lead to open the third set, then Kraskura registered a kill to put the Lady Pirates up 8-4. Campbell answered, though, with six unanswered points to take a 10-8 lead, then later went up 11-9.

The Lady Pirates scored the next three points to take a 12-11 lead, then Campbell won the next point to tie the set, before Hampton went back up 13-12. A 10-2 Campbell run put the Camels up 22-15, before the Lady Pirates clawed to within 22-21 on a 6-0 run, the run culminating in a kill from senior middle blocker Petra Parros (Bloomfield, N.J.).

But Campbell scored three of the next five points to clinch the set and take a 2-1 lead.

Campbell opened the fourth set on a 6-2 spurt, before the Lady Pirates went on a 4-1 run to close the gap to 7-6 after a kill from Maksimovic. Campbell later took an 11-8 lead, but Hampton answered with five straight points, taking a 13-11 lead after another Maksimovic kill.

Campbell then scored three straight points to go up 14-13, before the Lady Pirates went on a 5-1 run to take an 18-15 lead. A 7-2 Campbell run followed to give the Camels a 22-19 lead, before Hampton scored three straight points to tie the set at 22-22 after a kill from Kraskura.

But Campbell scored the next three points to take the set and the match.

Hampton hit .214 (56 kills, 25 errors in 145 attacks) for the match, while Campbell hit .232 (47 kills, 18 errors in 125 attacks). Both teams had six service aces, but Campbell only had four service errors to Hampton's eight.

Lindsey Coats led Campbell (7-2) with 13 kills.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Saturday, taking on Morehead State at 1:30 p.m., before squaring off against West Virginia at 4:30.
