Weekly Notes

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. –
The Hampton University volleyball team will compete in the Boston College Invitational this Saturday and Sunday in the Power Gym, playing three matches over the course of two days.

The Lady Pirates will take on Fairfield at 10:30 a.m. and Bryant at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, before taking on the host Eagles on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Hampton (3-0) opened the 2013 season this past Friday and Saturday by winning the North Carolina Central Invitational, winning matches against NCCU, Evansville, and Murray State to set the program's best start to a season since 2005.

Junior rightside Vendula Strakova (Brno, Czech Republic) was named Tournament MVP after recording 67 kills, six service aces, 37 digs, and 10.0 total blocks over the weekend, and senior middle blocker Petra Parros (Bloomfield, N.J.), who leads the MEAC with a .551 hitting percentage, was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Strakova was also named MEAC Player of the Week, and she became the first Hampton player ever to be named Division I National Women's Player of the Week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

Strakova currently leads the MEAC in kills (5.58 per set) and points (6.75 per set), while senior setter Bibiany Fonseca (Uberlandia, Brazil) leads the conference in assists (11.75 per set) and junior middle blocker Marija Kocevska (SkopjeKarpos, Macedonia) is averaging a MEAC-high 1.18 blocks per set.

The Lady Pirates lead the MEAC in team hitting percentage (.274), assists (13.08 per set), and kills (15.17 per set) after the first weekend of the regular season, and they're second in the conference in digs with 14.58 per set.

Hampton is third in opponent hitting percentage (.201) and tied for third in service aces (1.50 per set).

The Lady Pirates are 0-1 all-time against Bryant, having lost in straight sets back in 2010. Hampton never faced Fairfield or Boston College.
