PIRATES SET TO TAKE ON COPPIN STATE

BALTIMORE, Md. –
The Hampton University men's basketball team will look for its third straight win on Saturday, as the Pirates play their third straight road game in taking on Coppin State at 4 p.m. in the Physical Education Complex.
 
The Pirates (10-10, 5-2 MEAC) picked up their second straight win on Monday, defeating South Carolina State 67-56 thanks in large part to a 17-0 run midway through the second half. Sophomore forward Jervon Pressley (Charlotte, N.C.) led four Pirates in double figures with a season-high 14 points on 7-for-10 shooting, while also grabbing six rebounds, while senior guard Ramon Mercado (Hollywood, Fla.) came off the bench to add 12 points, six rebounds, three blocks and three steals.
 
Senior forward Du'Vaughn Maxwell (Manhattan, N.Y.) added 11 points and five blocks, and sophomore guard Ke'Ron Brown (Savannah, Ga.) chipped in 10 points.
 
The Eagles (7-13, 4-3 MEAC) snapped a two-game losing streak Monday night with a 70-54 win at North Carolina A&T. Coppin State was picked to finish ninth in the conference this season, its 28th under head coach Ron "Fang" Mitchell. Senior forward Michael Murray leads the Eagles in scoring with 15.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, while senior guard Andre Armstrong is averaging 12.8 points a contest.
 
Sophomore guard Sterling Smith is third on the team in scoring, averaging 10.6 points a game.
 
Hampton is 15-17 against Coppin State, and Coppin State is one of just two teams in the MEAC against whom the Pirates are under .500 all-time (North Carolina Central is the other). The two teams split last season's meetings, with the Pirates winning 59-53 in Baltimore, Md. after falling 67-65 at home in overtime. Earlier this season, Coppin State defeated the Pirates 71-68.
 
The two teams have split the last six meetings overall, and Hampton is 7-7 against Coppin State all-time on the road.
 
Hampton is 213-128 all-time as a Div. I program (since 1995) against teams currently in the MEAC, including an 11-5 mark in the conference last season. The Pirates are 5-2 in the MEAC this season after beating South Carolina State on Monday.
 
The Pirates went 7-8 on the road last season, and they closed out the regular season by winning their last six road contests. During Edward Joyner Jr.'s career as a head coach, Hampton is 24-39 overall in true road games away from the Convocation Center after beating Saint Peter's 64-59 on Nov. 12, falling 71-68 at Quinnipiac on Nov. 20, falling 81-67 at Missouri State on Nov. 24, falling 69-40 at Virginia on Nov. 26, falling 69-67 at Northern Kentucky on Dec. 18, falling 74-61 at North Carolina Central on Jan. 7, defeating Delaware State 73-60 on Jan. 11, beating Savannah State 80-71 on Saturday, and beating South Carolina State 67-56 on Monday.
 
The Pirates are 3-0 on the road in conference play so far this season.
