HAMPTON, Va. -- The first game of the 2016 Hampton University women's soccer season kicks off on Saturday with the Lady Pirates heading to Jersey City, NJ to face the Peacocks of Saint Peter's University at noon.
Hampton, in its second year of women's soccer, finished 0-10 in its inaugural season. The Lady Pirates fell 11-2 at Saint Peter's on Sept. 7 to drop their record then to 0-4.Â
Raven Williams and
LaTrice Montgomery are the returning goal scorers from the 2015 season.
Saint Peter's, who finished 2-15 in 2015, returns sophomore Barbara Paiva who topped the team in goals (6), shots (37) and shots on goal (21) last season.  Sophomore Michelle Laz and senior Brooke Tartis (four goals) join Paiva as multi-goal scorers from 2015.
The Lady Pirates are coached by first-year head coach
Frank Hughes.  He joined the Lady Pirates after a ten-year stint as the head boys coach at Kecoughtan High School. Â
Hampton returns five players from last season and has brought in a couple transfers along with an 11-person recruiting class as they head into the second year of the program.
The Lady Pirates continue a season-opening four-game road trip as they'll visit Lexington, Va. on Tuesday to take on Virginia Military Institute at 4 pm.
