Hampton Men’s Basketball Gear Up for Clash With Norfolk State

HAMPTON, Va. (Nov. 12, 2023) … Hampton University men's basketball returns to action on November 13 facing the Spartans of Norfolk State. Monday night's contest will begin a four-game road trip for the Pirates. HU begins the four-game stretch with facing consecutive opponents who won more than 20 games last season. Since the 1999-00 season the Pirates have faced the Spartans 51 times.

A Look at Your Pirates

In Hampton's last time out they secured their first win of the season defeating Mid-Atlantic Christian 109-49. Kyrese Mullen led the Pirates throughout the contest scoring a career-high 25 points and 18 rebounds. Mullen would produce his fifth double-double of his career. HU dominated the Mustangs on the board winning the rebounding battle 57-21. Dan Banister Jr. was a key contributor off the bench for the Pirates. Banister Jr. had a season-high 16 points while shooting an efficient 7-12 from the field. 

Through the first two games, Hampton has had success getting out in transition. The Pirates are averaging 27.5 fastbreak points per game. While HU has committed its fair share of turnovers, Coach Edward Joyner Jr.'s squad is forcing 17 a game. The Pirates also have the best rebounding margin in the conference.

A Look at the Spartans

Norfolk State enters Monday night's contest with a (2-0) record. The Spartans have wins over Penn State Wilkes-Barre and Apprentice School. In the series' most recent history, NSU has won four out of the last five matchups. The Spartans are coached by Robert Jones who enters his 11th season. Norfolk State under Coach Jones has made the NCAA Tournament once and the CIT four times.

The Spartans are led by Greensboro, N.C. native, Jamarii Thomas. Thomas through the first two games is averaging 15.5 points per contest while shooting 46% from the field. Norfolk State has one of the top offenses in the MEAC producing 96 points per contest. The Spartans have also ranked towards the top of their conference in rebounding. NSU on averaging is winning the rebounding battle by 21.5 rebounds.
