Hampton Men’s Basketball End Paradise Jam Against San Jose State

ST. THOMAS, V.I. (Nov. 19, 2023) … The Pirates still have an opportunity to pick up a second win at the Paradise Jam. Hampton dropped their first contest to Kent State but bounced back against Florida Gulf Coast. HU will face the Spartans of San Jose State who won 21 games last season. 

A Look at Your Pirates

Hampton in their last time out defeated the Eagles of Florida Gulf Coast 92-85. The Pirates would hit a season-high 12 threes. Tristan Maxwell was on fire from beyond the arc going 4-7 from three. Maxwell, Tedrick Wilcox Jr., and Kyrese Mullen all shot 50% or better from three. While Mullen would foul out of the contest, he still produced his third double-double of the season. Down the stretch Wilcox Jr. was perfect from the free throw line helping HU maintain their advantage late. 

The Pirate's offense this season has been spearheaded by Wilcox Jr. and Mullen. Wilcox Jr. has gotten it done outside the arc hitting 17 threes. The Norfolk, Va. native, Mullen has been a dominant force inside for Hampton. While he's shooting 60% from the field, Mullen has made the second-most threes on the team.

A Look at the Spartans

San Jose State enters Monday night's matchup with a (3-2) overall record. Similarly to the Pirates, the Spartans are (1-1) at the Paradise Jam. SJSU picked up their first win of the tournament against Norfolk State.  Jamarii Thomas had a team-high 15 points off the bench for the Spartans.  

The Spartans are coached by Tim Miles who enters his third season with the program. In his second year under the helm at SJSU, he would be named the Mountain West Coach of the Year. San Jose State would also have the MWC Player of the Year Omari Moore. So far this season Tibet Gorener has been the Spartans leading scorer.
