Hampton Women’s Soccer Kicks Off 2023 Campaign at Home

Hampton, Va. (August 17, 2023)... Hampton University women's soccer is set to begin the 2023 campaign with this weekend's slate of non-conference matches. The Lady Pirates begin the season against Robert Morris at Powhatan Field this Friday. HU will then close out the weekend against South Carolina Upstate Sunday afternoon at 4:00 PM.

A Look at Your Lady Pirates

Lady Pirates are coming off their first season competing in the CAA. Last season, they were a young squad but 22 players return from last year's squad. On the offensive side, 60 percent of the goal production returned with senior Maya Martir and Taryn Goodwin leading the way. Both were able to find the back of the net on three separate occasions. Martir throughout the season proved to be an initiator producing two assists. Back in net for the Lady Pirates is Alexis Deveaux returning for her sophomore season. Last season, she made the third most saves in the CAA with 87. Deveauz would also post a shutout against Regent.

While both of the series histories have been short the opponent has had the upper hand. Friday will mark the third time HU has faced off against Robert Morris. The Colonials did walk away with a win last season on their home turf and are (2-0) all-time against Hampton. While South Carolina Upstate leads the series (4-0-1), four out of the five matches have been decided by two goals or less. Sunday's meeting will be the first time in five years that the Lady Pirates have hoasted the Spartans.

A Look at Robert Morris

The Colonials are coming off a (7-7-4) season but were only able to produce one Horizon League win. Coach Chris Shaw enters his fourth season with the program. During his time at Robert Morris, he has four players receive all-conference honors. Kaoru Hayashi returns to the pitch after being out for the 2022 season. During her career at RMU, she has made two all-conference teams and was a United Soccer Coaches All-Region Team selection.

Robert Morris returns one of their top offensive threats Haleigh Finale. Finale finished the 2022 campaign with a team-high five goals and also produced two assists. In a close match against Saint Francis, she would score the game-winning goal. The Colonials will be missing veteran goalkeeper Isabella Bohlen. Boehlen posted a record of (6-6-4) when she was in goal.

A Look at South Carolina Upstate

Under coach Sharif Saber's first season, the Spartans finished with a winning record. USCU would also have success in the Big South Conference going (6-2-1). With leading South Carolina Upstate to nine wins Saber claimed the conferences Coach of the Year award.

The Big South Goalkeeper of the Year Cora Brendle returns for her senior season. Brendle in 18 games made 79 saves and below one goal allowed per match. Offensively, USCU's top three goal scorers from last season all come back. Dara Russo led the way last season with six goals. Russo, a native of Miamisburg, Ohio, received multiple preseason selections being named the Big South's Offensive Player of the Year and an all-conference selection.
