Hampton Women’s Soccer Falls on the Road to Saint Peter’s 5-2

Box Score Jersey City, N.J. (August 26, 2023)... Hampton women's soccer team concluded their second match in two days. While the Lady Pirates' scoring woes ended with a beautiful goal by Makayla Wade, Saint Peter's came out on top winning this afternoon's match 5-2.

How it Happened

With the Lady Pirates controlling possession early on, Hampton jumped out to an early lead. While on the attack HU would be fouled from about 35 yards out. Makayla Wade took the free kick for the Lady Pirates and found the back of the net for her first goal of the 2023 campaign. Morgan Edwards in the seventh minute broke free from Saint Peter's back line. Edward's shot just missed high and to the left resulting in a change of possession.

After HU's quick start to the match, The Peacocks scored the equalizer in the 11th minute of the match. SPU was able to find space in the wings stretching Hampton's defenders thin. Saint Peter's offensive surge continued helping swing the momentum in their favor. With solid passing from the midfield, the Peacocks found the back of the net making it 2-1.

Hampton continued to battle desperately trying to score to even things back up. Within the final five minutes of the first half, HU constructed two strong opportunities. Makayla Wade almost had another long-range goal, but just barely missed the post. Maya Martr would have a shot from close but SPU blocked it.

Coming out of the half, Saint Peter's jumped out to a three-goal lead scoring twice in a span of 15 minutes. Around the 70th-minute mark, Hampton was able to put continuous pressure on SPU. The Lady Pirates were able to get the ball in front of the Peacock's keeper. Freshman Maya Martir scored off of a deflection to cut down Saint Peter's lead to two. Martir's goal in the 75th minute would be her career first.

While Hampton had chances down the stretch, they could not convert them. Before the final horn rung, SPU scored once more regaining their three-goal advantage.
