Hampton Women’s Soccer Wrap-Up Non-conference Play This Weekend

Hampton, Va. (Aug. 30, 2023) … Hampton women's soccer concludes their non-conference schedule this weekend on the road. The Lady Pirates will travel to Emmitsburg, Md. on Friday to take on Mount St. Mary's at 2:00 PM. The weekend slate ends on Sunday at Radford with the match scheduled to start at 7:00 PM. Both games will be available to watch on ESPN+.
A Look at Your Lady Pirates

So far this season, Hampton has been one of the more physical teams in the CAA averaging 10.5 fouls per game. This has resulted in HU receiving a fair amount of bookings during the 2023 campaign. While the Lady Pirates are still searching for their first win, a lot of firsts happened for the young squad last weekend. Both Makayla Wade and Sanaa Perry scored their first goals of the season.

While Maya Martir has not found the back of the net yet, she leads the Lady Pirates in shots. Her ten shots this season are tied for the eighth most in the conference. 50 percent of her shots taken have been on goal. Through four games, Alexis Deveaux has surpassed her career saves total with 39. Currently, she leads the CAA and the NCAA for total saves.

A Look at Mount St. Mary's

The Mountaineers enter Friday's match with a (0-3-1) record and have already faced one CAA opponent. Mount St. Mary's is coached by Melissa Sherwood, who has posted a (13-57-12) record over her coaching career. Before starting her coaching career, Sherwood had a ten-year playing career. When she started coaching back in 2016, she was one of the youngest Division I Head Coaches.

Through the early portion of the 2023 season, the Mountaineers have found themselves scoreless. The squad has produced the second-fewest shots in the MAAC with 19. However, Mount St. Mary's has only allowed six goals this season. Graduate senior Klil Keshwar leads the Mountaineer's defensive efforts. Keshwar currently sits atop the MAAC and sits 17th for saves with 24.

A Look at Radford

Radford comes into Sunday's contest with a (2-2) record but one of those losses has come against #5 Virginia. The Highlanders are coached by Ben Sohrabi, who enters his 28th season with the program. Over his tenure at Radford, Shorabi has accumulated 285 wins and eight NCAA Tournament appearances. Currently, coach Sohrabi ranks first in the Big South for overall wins, conference wins, tournament victories, and NCAA Tournament appearances.

Radford this season has been one of the best passing teams in their conference averaging a league-high 2.5 assists per match. Freshman Hunter Rosenberg leads the Highlanders and the Big South with three assists. Paige Olson and Eileen Albers sit close behind Rosenberg with two. Defensively, sophomore Jullian Silverstone anchors Radford's back line. The Charlotte Hall, Md. native, has started every match playing the full 90 minutes on three separate occasions.
