Hampton Men’s Basketball Gear Up for Mid-Week Contest Against Delaware

HAMPTON, Va. (Jan. 3, 2024) … After opening Coastal Athletic Association play this past Monday, the Pirates return to action against Delaware. Thursday night's matchup will end Hamtpon's four-game road stretch before returning home to the Convocation Center. The Blue Hens have not faced a CAA opponent yet this season. 

A Look at Your Pirates

The Pirates are coming off a loss to perineal conference power Drexel. Hampton once again struggled to shoot from the field. However, three of HU's players finished the contest in double figures. Tristan Maxwell had a team-high 12 points against the Dragons. This would be his first ten-point-plus game since the matchup against Virginia Lynchburg. With a game-high 13 rebounds, Kyrese Mullen picked up his eighth double-double of the season.

Coach Edward Joyner Jr.'s bench has been one of the team's strong suits throughout the season. On average, the Pirates are getting 27.7 points per game off the bench, the fourth most in the CAA. Hampton's bench in their last five contests is averaging 30.8 points per game. Since his first career start against Virginia Lynchburg, Freshman Jerry Deng has seen an increased role. Through the past six games, Deng's minutes have grown to 20 per game

A Look at the Blue Hens

Delaware has posted a (8-5) record this season. The Blue Hens started out the season winning their first five games. UD is coached by Martin Ingelsby who enters his eighth season with the program. Coach Inglesby returned the program to the NCAA tournament during the 2021-22 season. The Blue Hens 2022 CAA tournament title marked their first conference crown since the 2014 season.

Jyáre Davis has been Delaware's leading scorer this season. Through 12 games the senior forward is averaging 19.5 points per game which is fourth in the conference. In half of the games this season Davis has produced 20 or more points. UD's Reilly Cavan has been a threat from beyond the arc. Cavan on average is hitting 2.58 threes per game which is the fourth most in the CAA
