Hampton Men’s Basketball Return to Convocation Center Hosting Campbell

HAMPTON, Va. (Jan. 5th, 2023) … After four straight road contests Hampton men's basketball team returns home to the Convocation Center. Saturday's contest at 2:00 PM will be the Pirate's first home conference game of the season. Since the 2018-19 season HU has faced Campbell on nine separate occasions. Coach Edward Joyner Jr.'s squad will be looking for their first Coastal Athletic Conference win of the season.  

A Look at the Pirates

Hampton fell to the Blue Hens of Delaware in their last time out. HU would have an off-shooting night going 30.5 percent from the field a season low. Sophomore Trey Thomas had another strong performance. Thomas had a team-high 16 points while making two threes. The Washington, D.C. native, was one point off of his career high. The Pirates have faced two perennial powers to start off conference play.

HU continues to play at one of the fastest paces in the country. According to kenpom.com, the Pirates have a tempo of 73.2 which is the 35th highest in the NCAA. Since the start of the conference portion of the schedule, Tristan Maxwell has emerged as an offensive option for Hampton. Through the first two CAA contests the Huntersville, N.C. native, is averaging 13 points per game. Maxwell is one of 16 players at the Division I level this season to have a triple-double.

  • 8: Kyrese Mullen sits seventh in the country for double-doubles
  • 122: Mullen has been one of the CAA's best rebounders grabbing the 50th most rebounds in the NCAA
  • 7.4: The Pirates are producing the second most steals in the conference

  • 27.4: Hampton's bench has been an asset ranking fourth in the CAA for bench points

A Look at the Camels 

Campbell started off conference play with a 76-62 loss to North Carolina A&T. CU was led by Anthony Dell'Orso who had a game-high 24 points. Dell'Orso this season has gone off for 20 or more points four times. After winning three consecutive games the Camels have dropped two in a row. Campbell is coached by Kevin McGeehan who enters his 11th season with the program. Under McGeehan CU has won 121 games over the last six seasons. 

Throughout the 2023-24 season, Coach McGeehan's squad ranks towards the top defensively. While playing at a slower pace Campbell is holding opponents to 64.8 points per game. The Camels defend the three at an elite level and rank toward the top of the CAA in field goal percentage defense. Anthony Dell'Orso has been their top offensive option this season. The Big South freshman of the year is producing 16.4 points per game on 44 percent shooting from the field.

  • 15.3: Campbell on average is committing the third-fewest fouls in the conference

  • 6.2: On average Campbell is making the 11th fewest threes per game in the conference
