HAMPTON, Va. (11/15/24) … The Pirates return home to the Convocation Center to host Norfolk State in the Battle of the Bay. Saturday marks the first home meeting for the Pirates since the 2021-22 season. The contest is to begin at 8:00 p.m. and will be streamed on FloSports.

A Deeper Dive into the Series

The Battle of the Bay in recent years has favored the Spartans. Norfolk State has won the last three consecutive contests and is 6-4 in the last 10. However, the series has favored the home team with HU going 13-8 inside the Convocation Center and NSU posting a 16-6 record at Joseph G. Echols Memorial Hall. During the last time Hampton faced Norfolk State at home, the game came down to the wire with the Pirates hitting a buzzer-beating three.

About Hampton

In its last time out, Hampton fell to Big East foe Providence in a defensive battle 60-51. Heading into the half, the Pirates had the lead 30-22 in coach Ivan Thomas's return to Friairtown. HU had success slowing down the pace of the game forcing turnovers. Providence refined the lead at the 9:12 mark in the second half. Throughout the contest, Hampton's bench provided a spark to the Pirate's offense. During the final 10 minutes, Trevor Smith recorded 11 points while hitting three shots from beyond the arc. Noah Farrakhan led HU in scoring with a game-high 16 points off the bench. With the Friars making their free throws down the line, Providence secured the victory.

Throughout the first month of the season, the Pirates have had success on the glass and receiving production off the bench. Hampton is averaging 42.6 points per game off the bench which is the 18th most in the country. In all three of three of the Pirates contests this season, the leading scorer has come off the bench. While Coach Thomas's side ranks fifth in the Coastal Athletic Association for rebounding, their success has come on the offensive end. The Pirates currently sit 10th in the country for offensive rebounds per game (17.3) and lead the CAA. Wayne Bristol Jr. and Richard Goods have helped Hampton reach this mark by averaging the fifth most offensive rebounds per game in the conference (2.67).

About Norfolk State

Norfolk State is coached by Robert Jones who enters his 12th season at the helm. During Jones's tenure, the program has amassed over 200 wins and has a 59 percent winning percentage. Last season the Spartans were crowned the College Basketball Insider Tournament champions after defeating Purdue Fort Wayne 75-67. In its last time out, Norfolk State fell to William & Mary on the road 84-73.

Similarly to the Pirates, the Spartans have been one of the better free-throw shooting teams in the country. In the opening month of the 2024-25 campaign, Norfolk State sits 20th in the nation for free throw percentage (81.3 percent). Brian Moore Jr. has led the way on the free throw line for the Spartans.  The Murray State transfer is one of 59 student-athletes in the country to remain perfect from the charity stripe.
