Hampton Men’s Basketball to Begin Conference Play Against North Carolina A&T

HAMPTON, Va. (Dec. 1, 2024) … After competing at the Cayman Islands Classic, the Hampton University men's basketball team returns home to the Convocation Center. The Pirates are set to host the Aggies of North Carolina A&T. Tuesday's contest will be Hampton's Coastal Athletic Conference opener and their first home game since Nov. 16. The Pirates have not won a home conference opener since the 2021-22 campaign when they defeated High Point 68-64.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Since joining the CAA, three of the four games between Hampton and North Carolina A&T have gone down to the wire. Both contests during the 2023-24 season were decided by one possession in the final minute. In recent history, the matchup has favored the Aggies with North Carolina A&T winning the last four. 

ABOUT HAMPTON

In its last time out, the Pirates fell to High Point 76-73 in the fifth-place game at the Cayman Islands Classic. While Hampton hit a three late to take the lead with 26 seconds left, the Panthers regained the advantage with a jumper inside the paint. Coach Ivan Thomas's side had other opportunities to go up late. Hampton missed their final two shots from beyond the arc. George Beale Jr. led the Pirates in scoring with 17 points off the bench. HU's bench would outscore High Point 37-23.

Throughout the season, the Pirates have been one of the better free-throw shooting teams in the country. On average, Hampton is shooting 78.5 percent from the charity stripe, which is 28th in the nation. Noah Farrakhan has been one of the better free throw shooters on Coach Thomas's squad. Farrakhan sits third in the conference shooting 88.5 percent from the charity stripe. Hampton's bench has been one of the best in the nation. The Pirates are getting 38 points off the bench per contest ranking HU 10th in the country. 

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA A&T

The Aggies are coached by Monte Ross, who is second season at the helm. Coach Ross has 12 years of experience in the CAA coaching at Delaware. North Carolina A&T fell to East Carolina 93-69 in their most recent contest. Sophomore guard Ryan Forrest led the Aggies in scoring with 25 points. While Forrest went 8-for-23 from the field, he went 8-for-10 from the free throw line. Land Glasper would also finish the contest in double figures. 

Through the first month of the 2024-25 campaign, the Aggies led the conference in fastbreak points per game (14). Along with having a top offense in the CAA, North Carolina A&T produces 8.6 steals per contest. Coach Ross's side has one of the best-shot blockers in the country. Nikolaos Chitikoudis has blocked 15 shots, raking him 28th in the nation. Chitikoudis is averaging a second-best in the conference 2.14 blocks per contest.
