Pirates Head South to Face Campbell at the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center

HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 20, 2024) … Hampton University men's basketball team returns to action after defeating Towson 67-61 inside the Convocation Center. Thursday night's game against the Campbell Camels marks the beginning of a two-game road trip for the Pirates. HU has already faced the Camels once this season. The Pirates fell at home to CU 80-69 back on Jan. 6, 2024. Hampton's Tedrick Wilcox Jr. had a solid performance scoring 18 points. 

A Look at Your Pirates

HU is coming off its first Coastal Athletic Conference win of the season. While Towson outrebounded the Pirates by 13, Coach Edward Joyner Jr.'s squad held the Tigers to 36.2 percent shooting from the field. Hampton's offense was lights out during the first 20 minutes of the contest with 57 percent accuracy from the field. The Pirates throughout the second half struggled to score but made shots down the stretch. Ford Cooper hit a clutch three to put HU ahead late with two minutes to go. 

Throughout last week's contests, Hampton received stellar performances from multiple players. Ja'Von Benson recorded five blocks ranking him 30th in the nation during this time frame. While the Pirates are known to commit the fourth most fouls per game in the CAA (16.4), HU only was responsible for 12 fouls per contest. During last week's slate of games, Jordan Nesbitt got to the free-throw line 15 times.

A Look at the Camels

Campbell enters Thursday's night contest with a 12-15 overall record and is 6-8 in the CAA. While the Camels have struggled away from the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center, CU has gone 9-5 in its home arena.  Campbell is coached by Kevin McGeehan who is completing his 11th season with the program. During his tenure with CU, the Camels have produced five winning seasons.

Coach McGeehan's squad is led by sophomore guard Anthony Dell'Orso. Dell'Orso leads the Camels in scoring averaging 18.9 points per game. The Melbourne, Australia native, has gone off for 30 or more points on two occasions. He has also been a defensive force for the Camels producing 1.5 steals per game.
