Hampton Men’s Basketball Host CAA Frontrunner UNCW

HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 9, 2024) … Hampton University men's basketball team gears up for a clash with Coastal Athletic Association frontrunner UNCW. With the Seahawks defeating Drexel Thursday night UNCW sits atop the CAA standings. In the history of the program, the Pirates have never hosted the Seahawks at the Convocation Center. Tip-off for Saturday afternoon's contest is at 2:00 PM.

A Look at the Pirates

Hampton in its last time out fell to Hofstra Pride 63-59. The Pirates held one the best three-point shooting teams in the conference to 23.8 percent from beyond the arc. Throughout the contest, HU's defense was able to answer the call. Sophomore Ja'Von Benson has a solid outing for Coach Edward Joyner Jr.'s squad. The Columbia, S.C. native, had his first career double-double scoring 11 points and producing 11 rebounds. Hampton's leading scorer was Joshua Lusane with 13 points on 6-7 shooting from the field.

While the Pirates on average are allowing 77.4 points per contest, in February HU's defense has found another gear. Since the beginning of the new month, Coach Joyner Jr's side has only permitted 61 points per game. Hampton's pace of play has slowed down since the beginning of the 2023-24 campaign. However, the Pirates are averaging 11.2 fast break points per contest which is third in the CAA.

A Look at the Seahawks 

UNCW in its last time out defeated Drexel 75-56 who was No. 1 in the CAA standings. With the Seahawks sweeping the series against Charleston, Coach Takayo Siddle's side sits first in the conference. Coach Siddle enters his fourth season with the program. The Seahawks are coming off back-to-back 20-win-plus seasons. In 2022 Coach Siddle's squad was the College Basketball Invitational champions. 

UNCW is led by junior forward Tazarien White. A native of Mansfield, Texas, White is averaging 20.1 points per game. White is effective at getting to the free throw line attempting 177 this season which is 14th most in the country. The Seahawks also have solid guard play with graduate senior Shykeim Phillips. While Phillips is averaging 13.4 points per contest, he has the 22nd best assist to turnover ratio in the nation.
