Pirates Post-Season Run Continues Against Delaware

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 9, 2024) … After defeating Elon in the opening round of the 2024 Jersey Mike's Coastal Athletic Association Tournament, Hampton's postseason run continues tonight against Delaware. The Pirates are 1-5 all-time against the Blue Hens. A Look at Your Pirates

Hampton is coming off its CAA tournament win defeating Elon 56-55. Head coach Edward Joyner Jr. has now won a conference tournament game in every Division I conference the Pirates have competed in. HU's defense dominated throughout the contest holding Elon to 33 percent shooting from the field and 22 percent from beyond the arc. Jerry Deng led the Pirates in scoring with 16 points going 6-12 from the field. Ja'Von Benson was three rebounds away from his fourth career double-double.

Throughout the 2023-24 campaign, Hampton has become one of the better shot-blocking teams in the conference. With Benson's 45 blocks this season, HU ranks third in the CAA. Benson also ranks 86th in the country for blocks. The Pirate's slew of options off the bench continues to be an asset for Hampton. On average HU is getting the 50th most bench points per game in the country (25.2).

A Look at the Blue Hens

Delaware enters the CAA tournament as No. 6 seed finishing the 2023-24 season with an overall record of 18-13. The Blue Hens ended the campaign with a 79-56 loss to Stony Brook on the road. UD's Jyare Davis led his team in scoring with 16 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. Delaware is coached by Martin Ingelsby who is ending his eighth season with the program. 

The Blue Hens had two selections for the CAA Men's Basketball Postseason Awards. Jyare Davis would be an All-CAA Second Team honoree. Davis this season averaged 17.5 points per game and 7.7 rebounds per contest. Fifth-year senior Christian Ray was also named the conference's Scholar Athlete of the Year.

  • 279: Christian Ray sits 35th in the country and leads the conference in rebounds
  • 9.0: Ray also led the CAA in rebounds per game at the guard position
