HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 26, 2025) … Hampton University men's basketball embarks on its final road trip of the 2024-25 regular season. The Pirates begin the final week of the regular season at Drexel. Hampton and Drexel are separated by only one game in the Coastal Athletic Association standings. 

ABOUT THE SERIES

The Pirates earned their first win ever in program history over the Dragons in the home matchup at the Convocation Center 63-58. Noah Farrakhan and  Kyrese Mullen were crucial for Hampton chipping in with 18 points. Mullen was also active on the glass with 12 rebounds and tallied a career-high five assists.

ABOUT HAMPTON 

With HU's win over Stony Brook, Coach Ivan Thomas has moved up another spot in the record books for wins by a first-year head coach. Thomas is currently tied with Kevin Nickleberry for second with 16 victories. Coach Bobby Collins holds the record with 19 wins during his initial season in the 2002-03 campaign. Prior to the 2024-25 campaign, the Pirates had never defeated Delaware, Drexel, Hofstra, Northeastern, Stony Brook, and UNCW.

In its last time out, Hampton defeated Stony Brook 81-49 in the final home contest of the 2024-25 season. Freshman Daniel Johnson led the Pirates on the offensive end with 15 points. Johnson has finished with double figures in six conference contests this season. George Beale Jr. and Wayne Bristol Jr. both chipped in with 12 points. Over the last three games, Bristol Jr has been on fire from beyond the arc. The Upper Marlboro, Md. native is 12-for-17 (70 percent) from three-point line. 

Heading into the final week of the season, the Pirates have one of the better rebounding margins in the conference. On average, HU is outrebounding its opponent by 3.9 rebounds which is fourth in the CAA and 73rd in the nation. Hampton has built this success on the offensive glass grabbing a conference-high 13.1 offensive rebounds per game. George Beale Jr. has been one of the conference's top three-point shooters as his 57 threes are the 12th most in the CAA.

ABOUT DREXEL

The Drexel Dragons currently sit ninth in the conference standings. Since the first meeting this season between the Pirates and Dragons, Coach Zach Spiker's squad has gone 2-1. During this stretch of games, the Dragons defeated perineal CAA power Charleston 64-55. Kobe MaGee led Drexel on the offensive end with 19 points. So far during the 2024-25 campaign, MaGee has been one of the conference's most efficient shooters.

The Dragons have consistently been effective at not fouling throughout the season. Coach Spiker's side is only committing 14.9 fouls per game which is the second-fewest in the CAA and 36th in the country. The Dragons have achieved this feat while being one of the best shot-blocking teams in the nation. Cole Hargrove has amassed the 42nd most blocks in the country (48).
