Hampton Set to Face Northeastern Inside Matthews Arena

HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 7, 2025) … Hampton University men's basketball is set to face the Northeastern Huskies inside the historic Matthews Arena. Saturday's contest marks the Pirates second-ever trip to Matthews Arena. The 2024-25 Season is the first time Hampton will face Northeastern twice in the same season. 

ABOUT THE SERIES

Prior to joining the Coastal Athletic Association, the Pirates had never faced the Huskies. Since becoming a member of the conference, HU has only squared off against Northeastern three times. The Huskies won the most recent meeting defeating the Pirates inside the Convocation Center 78-69. In the most recent matchup, George Belae Jr. led the Pirates in scoring with 19 points. Beale Jr. shot an efficient 8-for-14 from the field. 

ABOUT HAMPTON

The Pirates are coming off a 68-63 defeat to Monmouth Hawks inside the OceanFirst Bank Arena. Hampton kept the contest within a couple of possessions. Coach Ivan Thomas's side got the lead with a Daniel Johnson jumper. The Freshman led HU on the offensive end with 18 points. Johnson was two points shy of tying his career-high set during the conference road opener at Charleston. Monmouth took its largest lead of the night in the second half 57-45. Hampton clawed back to make it a four-point contest late. However, the Pirates committed turnovers in the final two minutes. 

Heading into the final full month of the 2024-25 campaign, Hampton leads the country in bench points per game. On average the Pirates bench is producing 39.5 points per contest which is also 54 percent of the team's points per game average. In 15 of HU's games this season, the Pirate's leading scorer has come off the bench. Coach Thoams's squad continues to be one of the best offensive-rebounding teams in the CAA. The Pirates are grabbing 13.5 offensive rebounds per game ranking second in the conference and 25th in the nation.

ABOUT NORTHEASTERN

Since the last contest between the Huskies and the Pirates, Northeastern has gone 1-1 in league play. While Coach Bill Coen's side fell to Elon on the road, the Huskies defeated Hofstra 77-68. Rashad King led Northeastern in scoring with 28 points and grabbed five rebounds. Junior guard Harold Woods produced a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. While Coach Coen's squad went 0-for-2 from the free throw line in the first half, the Huskies shot an impressive 87.5 percent from the charity stripe in the second frame.

Northeastern has been one of the best shot-blocking teams in the country. The Huskies are producing a conference-high 4.7 blocks per game and rank 38th in the nation. Collin Metcalf has been the anchor on the defensive end for Coach Coen's side. The Junior center has tallied 57 blocks which is the eight most in the country. In the Huskies win over Hofstra Metcalf produced five blocks.

Hampton returns to action on Thursday against Drexel the Dragons. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. and the game will be on Monumental Sports Network and FloCollege.
