Women's Soccer faces S.C. State Sunday in non-conference finale

HAMPTON, Va. (Sept. 13, 2025) … The Hampton University women's soccer team will close out its non-conference slate and a four-match homestand on Sunday evening with a 5 p.m. first kick against the South Carolina State Bulldogs at Powhatan Field in Norfolk.

Hampton (4-3-1) was last in action on Wednesday afternoon and defeated Virginia State 3-1. The game was scoreless for 74 minutes before the teams exploded for four combined goals in 11 minutes. Keri Geter answered the Trojans goal 48 seconds later and the Pirates had tallies from Mattie Edozie and Jayda Sutton to ice a 3-1 win.

South Carolina State (1-7) also played on Wednesday when they dropped a 6-0 decision at Elon. The Bulldogs have been blanked in their last three matches having not scored since a 10-2 loss to Gardner-Webb on August 31.

ABOUT HAMPTON
Nylah Jennings leads the team with seven points (3g, 1a), while Caitlyn Peace and Madisyn Strange have six points apiece scoring three goals each. Jayda Sutton also has six points with two goals and two assists. She shares the assist lead with Makayla Wade with those two helpers.

Through eight matches, the Pirates have had 11 different players score goals. That total ranks sixth nationally among teams that have scored at least 15 goals this season.

In the net, Avery John has one solo clean sheet and has combined for two with Annika Kleffmann. John has a .738 save percentage with 31 saves in eight matches, while Kleffmann has two saves in three matches.

A win for the Pirates against S.C. State will give them no worse than a .500 home winning percentage for the first time in program history.

ABOUT S.C. STATE
The Bulldogs have lost six matches in a row. Their win came against Alabama State (1-0), while they've lost to Presbyterian (2-1), Stetson (2-1), Citadel (1-0), Gardner-Webb (10-2), UNC Asheville (1-0), Alabama A&M (3-0) and Elon (6-0).

Kayla Moses leads the team in scoring with three goals and six points. Karla Gordon and Alana Watts have scored one goal apiece for the Bulldogs.

In the net, Jada Gittings has started all eight matches and has a goals against average of 3.02 and a .500 save percentage.

Hampton begins CAA play on Thursday night as they visit Towson for a 6 p.m. start. They'll finish the opening weekend on Sunday, September 21 with a 1 p.m. start at Drexel.
