HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball team beat Coppin State
3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-16, 25-14) at Holland Hall on Tuesday night to remain undefeated in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play.
The Lady Pirates (7-8, 2-0 MEAC) have now won five of their last six matches.
Hampton opened the first set with a 3-1 lead, when senior
Mianna Armstrong (Lomond, Alberta) recorded a kill following a kill from freshman
Krista Kraskura (Kuldiga, Latvia). Coppin State tied the set at 3-3, before junior
Ornela Cadavid (Cali, Colombia) slammed a kill to put Hampton back up 4-3.
An ace from sophomore
Sheileen Pagan (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) put Hampton up 6-3. Junior
Mariah Baylor (Minneapolis, Minn.) added another ace later in the set to make the score 11-7. Armstrong and Cadavid teamed on a block to put Hampton up 16-11.
Hampton kept control of the set before winning 25-18.
The Lady Eagles (3-15, 0-3 MEAC) jumped to a 4-1 lead in the second set, before Hampton went on a 6-1 run to take a 6-4 lead. Kraskura added another kill later to put Hampton up 7-5, before Coppin State tied the set at 7-7.
The score tied two more times before the Lady Eagles took an 11-10 lead. Coppin State would keep Hampton at arm's length to take the second set 25-21 to even the match at 1-1.
Armstrong tied the third set at 5-5 with a kill, before freshman
Sonja Maksimovic (Belgrade, Serbia) recorded an ace to give the Lady Pirates a 6-5 lead. A Kraskura kill later in the set put Hampton up 10-6. Coppin State would keep creeping within a couple points, but the Lady Pirates never relinquished control – even leading 22-14 when Cadavid and senior
Juliana Chavez (Bogota, Colombia) teamed on a block.
After taking the third set 25-16, the Lady Pirates jumped to a 6-1 lead when Kraskura recorded an ace. The Lady Pirates kept their collective foot on the proverbial gas pedal, jumping to a 14-4 lead after another Kraskura kill, before eventually going up 19-4 to close out an 8-0 run before Coppin State scored again.
Junior
Brittany Hill (Sacramento, Calif.) clinched the match with her only kill of the night.
The Lady Pirates hit a season-best .233 as a team, recording 44 kills and just 14 errors in 129 total attacks. Hampton's best set was the third, when the Lady Pirates hit .286 (14 kills, four errors in 25 kills) – while Hampton hit .276 (nine kills, one error in 29 attacks) in the fourth set.
Hampton also held a 12-8 edge in service aces.
Coppin State hit .080 as a team, marking the first time this season the Lady Pirates have held an opponent under .100. The Lady Eagles had 40 kills and 29 errors in 138 total attacks. The Lady Eagles hit a team-best .242 (13 kills, five errors in 33 attacks) in the second set.
Kraskura recorded her fifth double-double of the season, and her third straight, with a team-high 14 kills and 10 digs on defense. She hit .250 for the match, recording six errors in 32 attacks. Armstrong added 10 kills, hitting a team-best .556 because of no errors in 18 attacks.
Armstrong also had a team-high three service aces.
Chavez came off the bench to record a team-high 23 assists, while senior
Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) added 15 assists to bring her within 28 of tying the all-time school record.
Pagan led the team with 21 digs on defense.
Baylor assisted on seven blocks, while Chavez assisted on six. Cadavid added three block assists, while also recording both of Hampton's solo blocks. Hampton had 12 team blocks to just two for Coppin State.
Ariel Richard led Coppin State with 12 kills to go along with 12 digs on defense, while Christina Epps added 10 kills. Gabrielle Otero had a team-high 17 digs.
