LADY PIRATES CELEBRATE SENIOR DAY BY SWEEPING HOWARD

Box Score

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University volleyball team won its final home match of the season on Sunday, beating Howard 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-22) in Holland Hall to send its four seniors out on a winning note.

The Lady Pirates (11-12, 6-4 MEAC) have now won six straight over Howard, and Hampton remains in third place in the MEAC Northern Division.

After Howard tied the first set 3-3, the Lady Pirates went on a 13-2 run to take a 16-5 lead, thanks in large part to kills from sophomore Petra Parros (Bloomfield, N.J.) and senior Mianna Armstrong (Lomond, Alberta) – as well as blocks from Parros and junior Mariah Baylor (Minneapolis, Minn.).

Armstrong recorded a kill later in the set to put Hampton up 21-11, before freshman Andjela Petrovic (Belgrade, Serbia) recorded the first kill of her career to put the Lady Pirates up 23-13.

Parros scored Hampton's last two points as the Lady Pirates won the first set 25-16.

Howard jumped out to a 3-1 lead early in the second set, before freshman Krista Kraskura (Kuldiga, Latvia) recorded a kill to stop the run before it truly got started. The two teams then took turns taking the lead before Hampton tied the set 15-15 on a Parros kill.

Howard then scored four in a row to take a 19-15 lead, before Hampton went on a 5-1 run to tie the set at 20-20 after a service ace from Armstrong. The score was tied four more times – most recently at 24-24, but Hampton scored two straight, taking the set 26-24 after an ace from Parros.

Howard led 8-7 in the third set, before freshman Sonja Maksimovic (Belgrade, Serbia) tied the set with a kill and Kraskura had a service ace to give the Lady Pirates a 9-8 lead. Another 5-1 Lady Pirates run inflated that lead to 14-9 after sophomore Sheileen Pagan (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) recorded a service ace.

Parros had another kill later in the set to put Hampton up 20-15, before Howard scored three straight to close within 20-18. Maksimovic recorded a kill to put Hampton up 22-19, and the Lady Bison could never close the gap anymore than two the rest of the way.

With the 25-22 set win, the Lady Pirates earned their third three-set victory of the season.

Hampton hot .236 as a team, thanks to 43 kills and just 17 errors in 110 total attacks. The Lady Pirates hit a team-best .441 (17 kills, two errors in 34 attacks) in the first set, while also hitting .222 (13 kills, five errors in 36 attacks).
