Box Scores: vs. Campbell | vs. NCCU
DURHAM, N.C. – The Hampton University volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday in the Hilton RTP/North Carolina Central Volleyball Tournament on Saturday at McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.
The Lady Pirates (1-2) defeated NCCU
3-2 (23-25, 25-21, 25-23, 13-25, 15-5) in evening action after Campbell beat Hampton
3-2 (15-25, 25-18, 25-19, 17-25, 15-7) in the morning. Hampton has now won four straight matches against NCCU.
Senior
Mianna Armstrong (Lomond, Alberta) was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Hampton led the first set 10-9 before NCCU answered with seven unanswered points to take a 15-10 lead. The Lady Pirates responded with five straight points, tying the set at 15-15 on an Armstrong kill. The score tied for more times before NCCU squeaked out the 25-23 win.
The Lady Pirates found themselves in a hard-fought second set, using an 8-1 run to take a 16-12 lead before winning the set.
But Hampton really showed its resiliency in the third set; NCCU had taken control of the set, 23-19, and appeared set to go up 2-1. The Lady Pirates responded, though, with a 6-0 run to close out the set, stealing the lead with a 25-23 decision.
NCCU quickly took back momentum, though, opening the fourth set on an 11-1 run after Ashley McCarthy slammed home an ace. Hampton would go on a 5-1 spurt later in the set to cut NCCU's lead to 17-11, but NCCU scored six straight en route to a 25-13 win to force the fifth set.
The Lady Pirates took back control, opening the final set 7-2. After NCCU closed to within 8-5, sophomore
Sheileen Pagan (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) recorded a kill and Armstrong slammed home an ace of her own to put Hampton up 11-5.
Armstrong later clinched the match with yet another ace.
Hampton hit .231 (49 kills, 21 errors in 121 attacks) against NCCU, including a team-best .625 in the fifth set – thanks to five kills and no errors in eight attacks. The Lady Pirates also hit .250 (14 kills, six errors in 32 attacks) in the third set.
NCCU, which held a 12-10 edge in service aces, hit .205 (50 kills, 26 errors in 117 attacks) as a team – including a team-best .348 (10 kills, two errors in 23 attacks) in the fourth set.
Armstrong led the Lady Pirates with 13 kills and 10 digs on defense, recording her second double-double of the day. She hit .274 against NCCU, recording just four errors in 33 chances. Pagan added 10 kills, seven digs and a team-high three service aces.
Senior
Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) had 27 of Hamptons 39 assists.
Shantal Moore led NCCU with 14 kills, while Dayanna Arrufat added 12.
In the first set against Campbell, the Lady Pirates jumped out to a 4-1 lead, before Campbell fought back to within 7-6. The Lady Pirates then answered with a 13-3 run to take a 20-10 lead. Pagan recorded a kill later in the set to put the Lady Pirates up 23-12.
The second set began as a back-and-forth affair, and the two teams were tied 8-8 before Campbell went on a 7-0 run to take a 15-8 lead. Campbell would take control of the set, winning 25-18 before also taking the third set 25-19.
Campbell jumped out to a 6-1 lead to open the fourth set, but the Lady Pirates went on a 7-1 run to take an 8-7 lead. A later 4-0 spurt put Hampton up 19-15. The Lady Pirates would end the set scoring seven unanswered points to win 25-17.
Campbell went up 3-1 to start the final set and held the Lady Pirates at bay.
Hampton hit .213 (54 kills, 25 errors in 136 attacks) as a team, compared to a .241 hitting percentage for Campbell – thanks to 55 kills and 21 errors in 141 total attacks. The Lady Pirates, who also held a 9-7 edge in service aces, hit a team-best .364 (16 kills, four errors in 33 attacks) in the fourth set.
Campbell hit .385 (seven kills, two errors in 13 attacks) in the fifth set and .351 (17 kills, four errors in 37 attacks) in the second set.
Senior
Ornela Cadavid (Cali, Colombia) had a team-high 12 kills, while Armstrong added 11 and Pagan chipped in 10 kills. Cadavid had no errors in 16 attacks, hitting a team-high .750.
Elkayam had 24 assists, while senior
Juliana Chavez (Bogota, Colombia) added 11 assists off the bench.
Armstrong added a team-high 10 digs.
Kelsey Marek led Campbell with 11 kills and a .688 hitting percentage.
The Lady Pirates will be back in action Friday and Saturday, Sept. 2-3, when they travel to Flagstaff, Ariz. to compete in the Northern Arizona FiestaBowl. Hampton will face New Mexico on Friday, before squaring off against Northern Arizona and San Jose State on Saturday.
