LADY PIRATES FALL TO NORTHERN ARIZONA, SAN JOSE STATE

The Hampton University volleyball team dropped both of its matches on Saturday at the Northern Arizona Fiesta Bowl at the Rolle Activity Center, as host NAU won 3-0 (25-10, 25-20, 25-16) and San Jose State took a 3-0 (25-14, 25-8, 25-12) victory.

Junior Mariah Baylor (Minneapolis, Minn.) was named to the All-Tournament Team after recording eight kills along with 5.0 blocks and hitting .185 for the weekend.

Northern Arizona hit .224 as a team, thanks to 41 kills and 19 errors in 98 attacks. The Lumberjacks, who won the tournament with a five-set win over New Mexico in Saturday's night cap, hit a team-best .355 (14 kills, three errors in 31 attacks) in the first set.

NAU also had a 4-1 edge in service aces.

Hampton (1-5) hit -.044 as a team, recording 17 kills and 21 errors in 91 attacks. The Lady Pirates hit a team-best .036 (six kills, five errors in 28 attacks) in the third set.

NAU jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first set before the two teams traded points. Baylor recorded a block to bring Hampton within 10-5, but the Lumberjacks outscored the Lady Pirates 15-5 the rest of the way to take the first set.

Hampton pounced to open the second set, going up 4-2 after an ace from senior Juliana Chavez (Bogota, Colombia) and the first career kill for freshman Marija Kocevska (SkopjeKarpos, Macedonia). NAU clawed back to force an 8-8 tie, before Hampton scored three straight to go up 9-6.

The Lumberjacks went on a 7-1 run to take a 13-10 lead, before the Lady Pirates forced a 13-13 tie after Kocevska and sophomore Petra Parros (Bloomfield, N.J.) teamed up on a block. A 5-0- NAU burst put the Lumberjacks back up 18-13, and NAU would go on to win the set 25-20.

Hampton fought to force a 4-4 tie to open the third set, before NAU went on a 4-0 run to take an 8-4 lead. Parros and senior Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) teamed up on a block later in the set to pull Hampton within 11-10, but the Lumberjacks closed the set on a 14-6 run to clinch the match.

Sophomore Ioana Kalfinova (Sofia, Bulgaria) led Hampton with seven kills in the match, hitting a team-best .074 thanks to five errors in 27 attacks. Elkayam led the way with 11 of Hampton's 16 assists, while senior Mianna Armstrong (Lomond, Alberta) had a team-high nine digs.

Junior Brittany Hill (Sacramento, Calif.) had eight digs on defense.

Kobi Christensen, the Tournament MVP, had a team-high 12 kills, while Katie Bailey had 10.

San Jose State hit .427 as a team in its match against Hampton, recording 43 kills and just 11 errors in 75 attacks. SJSU hit a team-best .500 (14 kills, two errors in 24 attacks) in the first set, while also hitting .444 in the second set and .333 in the third set.

SJSU held a 5-1 edge in service aces.

Hampton hit .000 (16 kills, 16 errors in 67 attacks) as a team, including a team-best .136 (eight kills, five errors in 22 attacks) in the first set.

A Baylor kill in the first set cut SJSU's lead to 12-8, but SJSU responded with a 13-6 run to close out the first set – before jumping to a 9-1 lead to open the second set. Chavez recorded a kill to cut SJSU's lead to 14-5, but the Lady Pirates would get no closer.

Elkayam gave Hampton a 3-2 lead to open the third set with an ace, before SJSU answered with a 9-0 run to take a 12-3 lead. Kalfinova brought Hampton to within 18-9 with a kill later in the set, but SJSU pulled away to pick up its second win of the season.

Armstrong and Baylor each had a team-high four kills for the Lady Pirates, as Baylor hit a team-best .250 thanks to just one error in 12 attacks. Elkayam recorded 12 of Hampton's 15 assists, while Armstrong led the way with five digs.

Alex Akana led SJSU with nine kills.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Sept. 16-18, when they travel to Daytona Beach, Fla. To compete in the Holiday Inn Resort/Bethune-Cookman Invitational.
